ultinate incidence of such a scheme, with the salary scales assumed above and upon the basis of the existing staff, would not exceed $13,000 a year.

Provision for the salary scales as- sumed above, together with super- annuation would therefore require an ultimate additional endowment of some $1,000,000. Of this sum it may be estimated that one half should be raised within the next two years as regards the balance, it is only essential that the University nathorities should be in a position to enter into contracts of service on the assumption that it will be forthcoming in the course of the next ten years.

The creation of additional lecture- ships upon a strictly limited scale, even for the subjects already taught, will probably be necessitated by increasing numbers in the near future. Due differentiation between students of varying capacity but taking identical courses, which is impossible with limited numbers, would be facilitated thereby. An addition of $500,000 to the general endowment fund should remove any anxiety under this head.

Endowment of Chairs.

A very usual form of benefaction elsewhere has been the endowment of individual Chairs (Professor- ships), which, being named after the donur, serve as a concrete memorial of his generosity. The Chairs so founded are perhaps most often for the teaching of
